The thing that sucks about being half goblin -- well, there's a lot of things, to be honest. The occasional hankering for human flesh was pretty high on the list of worst things, though. It wasn't the one Daisy was worried about at that particular moment! It wasn't like he'd snuck off to the creek at night to lure an unsuspecting victim and drink their blood by the light of the moonlight or anything. No, the important thing that happened to suck about being a goblin on this particular night as Daisy hung out alone on the school grounds against the rules was the simple fact that ... goblins are largely nocturnal.
Also, Daisy wasn't allowed to have any sleeping medications because they gave him hallucinations. No one was ever sure if it was the human or the goblin that made him so sensitive to pharmaceuticals. But it was definitely the goblin side that made him violent when distressed, and the hallucinations generally made him absolutely psychotic with rage. So he ignored the rules confining him to his dorm after 11 o'clock at night and the staff of the school ignored him ignoring the rules, if only because arguing with Daisy was a complete nightmare.
There was very little to do at the Academy in the daytime, in Daisy's opinion, let alone in the nighttime. His general practice on nights like this when he really, really needed to just... be in the moonlight, was to wander as far away from the Academy as possible before midnight, then take a very long time to return. Usually by then his body was at least tired, even if his brain wasn't. Stupid though it may seem, Daisy often relied on meditative practices to help him get to sleep. That was something he would never admit to anyone out loud.
The grass was wet from rain that fell earlier in the evening, though, and Daisy's shoes and the hems of his jeans were already soaked through. With a grumble he seated himself on a rock by the creek and tucked his hands into the sleeves of his sweater to keep them warm. It was eerily silent all across the grounds, and it seemed like not a creature was stirring throughout the entire Academy. That definitely wasn't true, though. There was always an emergency going on in one of the dorms. Sometimes there were two in a single night.
Well, at least tonight they couldn't blame Daisy. His pupils dilated hugely to see in the dark, his eyes seemed to take up his whole head. In the moonlight the green colour of his skin practically became luminescent. His sensitive pointed ears twitched and swiveled at every slight noise. Perched on his rock, Daisy looked anything but human.
Luckily, humans tended to be a minority at St. Jude's.

at once i knew that i was not magnificent
straight above the highway aisle, jagged vacance thick with ice and i could see for miles and miles and miles✦ ✦ ✦ Although the moon wasn't entirely full yet, Lupine had been restless all day. As soon as the clock struck eleven and all the students were in bed, Lupine had run out to the grounds. To his utter mortification he had discovered many, many years ago - almost fifty, by now - he had to remove his clothes before changing his shape or they would rip apart. Clothing is more expensive than you might realise. People take it for granted when they don't shift into another animal at certain times of the month. He usually hid his clothes under a bush, and tried to position himself thus that no one would be able to see him from the academy windows. Taking a deep breath, he shucked his pants and pulled his shirt over his head, already shivering from the cold. The dew was wetting his pants, and he was already miserable without even shifting. He knew that the dew would get to his clothes and that by the time he was finished running around like a brainless animal he's have to crawl into damp, cold clothes. Once he was naked, his entire body freezing except for his face, which was burning with embarrassment even though no one could see him, he began to shift. If you've never experienced a transformation from one species to another, it can be hard to imagine. The feeling of your bones shifting, elongating, cracking in half, and bending in all the wrong ways is incredibly painful no matter how often you experience it. There are places where the bones grow faster than the skin and your body is suddenly too small for your skeleton. It's a feeling not far from the sensation of wearing a really tight dress. You immediately want to get it off, but the more you panic and writhe, the more entangled you become. A howl of pain left Lupine's lengthening jaws, cracking in the middle as his larynx shifted within him, then becoming the eerie, haunting sound of a true wolf. The tears falling from his eyes from the pain stopped as his tear ducts shrank back into his skull and disappeared. Fur began to grow, making his body itch all over.It seemed like a century before the change was complete. As his spine curved Lupine fell forward and hit the ground hard with his new-grown paws. Heaving and panting, Lupine took a moment to get his bearings and recover from the transformation. Then he took off like a shot across the grounds, tearing the grass and the soil beneath him with his speed. It was as he was approaching the creek that he caught a smell coming up wind that made him slam on the proverbial brakes, his nostrils quivering as he strained to identify the source. After a moment of stillness, he recognized the smell, and felt his stomach sink in dread. Daisy Jackson was well known to all the staff at St. Jude's. Lupine had managed to avoid him for the last five years mostly because Daisy had absolutely no interest in learning languages, but they finally had met only a few months before on the day of the unfortunate incident in which Daisy threw a plate at a lunch lady's head. Lupine's job was to comfort the lady who was (thankfully) unharmed. Lupine felt it was crucial to get out of this area without a confrontation, and hopefully unharmed. [/blockquote]
